Potsdam Berlin City Tours Bridge of Spies

The Tour:

We start from Potsdam Central Station towards the city center, with a short stop at the Alter Markt. At Bassinplatz, between the French and Dutch Quarters, lies the Soviet Cemetery of Potsdam, a final resting place for hundreds of fallen Soviet soldiers after World War II.

Next, we head to Cecilienhof Palace, the historic site of the Potsdam Conference. In the summer of 1945, the heads of state from the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and the USA met in the UNESCO World Heritage Park Neuer Garten to decide the future of post-war Europe.

Directly next to the Neuer Garten, during the Cold War, was an important Soviet KGB intelligence location. In the so-called "Forbidden City," there was also a detention prison, which we will briefly visit.

Then, our "Buchanka" takes us to Glienicke Bridge, famously known as the "Bridge of Spies" thanks to the Hollywood production of the same name. This "Fate Bridge" in Potsdam once divided East and West.

To conclude, we visit the Potsdam Computing Center, a threatened DDR-era building. A massive socialist mosaic illustrates scenes of space exploration, another example of the Soviet influence on daily life in Potsdam.

Our extraordinary Potsdam city tour in the "Buchanka" ends at the Central Station.

Stadtrundfahrten Potsdam

The Tour:

Potsdam is an incredibly historic city. Once a Prussian residence and garrison town, it also played a major role in the 20th century.

We start at Potsdam Central Station or your hotel. First, we visit Babelsberg, the birthplace of European film. Since 1912, films have been produced here, some of which have shaped cinematic history.

Nearby, the villa district gained global attention in the 20th century. In 1945, during the Potsdam Conference, world leaders resided in these mansions. This area, on the border of West Berlin, remained a Soviet restricted zone for years.

From Hiroshima-Nagasaki Square, home to Truman’s Villa, we pass Churchill’s and Stalin’s villas, reaching the UNESCO World Heritage Park Babelsberg. Walking through the stunning park to Babelsberg Palace, we discuss Cold War history, including escape attempts through the former Berlin Wall border.

Through the former East German enclave Klein Glienicke, we arrive at Glienicke Bridge, world-famous as the "Bridge of Spies," a key Cold War border crossing.

Next, we explore the UNESCO World Heritage Neuer Garten Park with Cecilienhof Palace, the site of the Potsdam Conference. Nearby, the Soviet "Military Town No. 7" served as a top-secret KGB intelligence location.

We then pass through the Russian Colony "Alexandrowka" and former barracks on our way to Sanssouci Park, Potsdam’s most famous landmark and the favorite residence of Prussian King Frederick the Great.

At the New Palace, on the far end of Sanssouci Park, we explore Prussia’s rise to European power and its connection to the First World War.

Returning to the city center, we stop at the Computing Center, a DDR-era building with a 70-meter-long socialist mosaic about space exploration. Nearby, we see the controversial reconstruction site of the Garrison Church.

Finally, we visit the Alter Markt, Potsdam’s historic center, featuring St. Nicholas Church, the City Palace, the Old Town Hall, and the Barberini Palace. The tour ends at the starting point.

This exceptional tour focuses on 20th-century history but also covers earlier times and current discussions, showing how history is a chain of interconnected events – nowhere clearer than in Potsdam!
