Risen from ruins – From Karl Marx Allee to Alexanderplatz

On this tour, you will discover the intriguing architecture of socialist East Berlin. From the Stalinallee (Stalin Blvd.) of the 1950s to the Karl-Marx-Allee (Karl-Marx Blvd.) of the 1960s to the modern Alexanderplatz square of the 1970s, we follow a magnificent boulevard built on the ruins of war-torn Berlin.

The tour starts at Frankfurter Gate with its two impressive towers, highlighting the beginning of Stalin Boulevard. At Strausberger Platz the neo-classical Socialist architecture is followed by Socialist Modernism. Outstanding examples of Socialist Modernism are the Café Moskau (Café Moscow) and Kino International.

The 'Haus des Lehrers' (House of the Teacher) with its impressive Socialist Mosaic 'Our Life" connects the Karl Marx Allee with the Alexanderplatz. The Alexanderplatz square once was the Socialist city center of East-Berlin. The unique TV Tower is a symbol of Berlin.

Walking along the Karl Marx Allee helps you to understand the political and social dimensions of architecture in East Berlin - especially in the light of the Cold War.

The walking tour ends at the World Time Clock at Alexanderplatz.
